“When I read the notes sent home with my daughter inviting me to participate in "Eye Spy What's Right With the World", I knew I had the perfect opportunity to share a recent experience I had. My daughter, Kelsey Hanrahan, attends Centennial Elementary in the North End. Being a kind, beautiful and sometimes very stubborn child, she insisted on a Sunday just recently that she was going to have a juice stand. I knew there was no getting around this because it was the last words out of her mouth before she went to sleep and the first, the next morning when she woke up. Taking me aside, my husband said that he didn't know if this was such a good idea. He remembered as a little boy being disappointed and broken-hearted when he had decided to have a juice stand. He ended up sitting for hours waiting for people to come and he didn't want his own daughter possibly suffering the same fate. "Maybe we should try to talk her out of it" he said. It was decided then. Kelsey would have her juice stand. We went down to the dollar store when it opened at noon and she bought, with her own money, paper cups and a table cloth. Then, we stopped at the corner store and purchased some ice-cubes. We set up the piano bench with the table cloths over it, outside. The customers could choose apple or grape juice at 25 cents a cup. Her first customers were the people upstairs-she made a dollar. Ten minutes later she came in and asked me if she could move the stand to the front street. A ladt had been walking by and suggested she might

do better there. Her father moved the stand to the front street and we went back inside. I wondered how Kelsey was doing. It was hot outside and I hoped she wasn't getting discouraged. About half an hour later I decided to check and as I turned the corner, she's sitting at her stand. "Oh! Hi Mommy, guess how much money I made?" "How much?" I asked thinking a dollar or two. "Eight dollars!" she grinned. "You're lying!" I laughed. "No really" she said and she counted it our before my very eyes. "One old lady drove by in a car and gave me two dollars and when I asked her what kind of juice she wanted she told me "That's okay dear. You take that." After two hours of customers (three stopped in cars and I saw many of our neighbors), she had made a total of nine dollars and seventy five cents. As proud as I am for my daughter for working hard and earning her own money, I am just as proud of my community and the people in it. There is a "common good" in all people and I saw it that day. Submitted by Cathy Hanrahan”
