 Local youth Celebrated!

The 3rd annual ‘Teens Who Care Awards’, hosted by The Resource Centre for Youth were held on the evening on April 27th where youth were recognized for “Being the Best for the World”.

The event honoured teens from the Greater Saint John area  who have devoted their valuable time to make our community a better place by their volunteer effort and who have a special commitment to solve social problems.  Eleven teens, along with their special guests, attended a gala event held at the Brunswick Delta where they received recognition for their leadership and volunteerism.  Included in the evening, was a  taped video message from the individual who nominated the teen – a great personal touch to hear why they nominated the teen; to hear what these youth have accomplished at such a young age was quite amazing!

Congratulations to the 2011 recipients of the Teens Who Care Awards!

gbysd 2011.jpgGlobal Youth Service Day

The ‘Celebrate What’s Right with The World’ initiative was again pleased to partner with the Teen Resource Centre in this year’s Global Youth Service Day.

Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world, mobilizing youth to identify and address the needs of their communities through volunteeringIt also supports youth to make educated choices and exhibit hospitality around their communities, while educating the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders.  Over the past few years, thousands of Saint John youth have participated.

Schools were encouraged to participate in this year’s event which took place from April 15th to April 17th.  To kick off the event again this year, poster boards, which were created by schools depicting all of their community involvement over the last year, were on display at Brunswick Square throughout the weekend – an impressive display with 24 schools participating! (Check back later for pictures...will be coming soon to the website!)  Also, in the weeks leading up to, and following, the weekend, many schools were very busy giving back to their community and/or supporting global efforts.  Check out the list below for some of the events the schools were or will be involved with.  The youth of School District 8 demonstrated, and continue to demonstrate many of the concepts of Celebrate including ‘Be Your Best for the World’, “Take Yourself to the Edge’, and “Recognize Abundance”!

  • M. Gerald Teed School:  Completed a K-2/School Wide yard/Community Centre clean up; all students, staff, parents and grandparents pitched in!
  • Beaconsfield Middle School: Students had a bake sale  in support of the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. The students raised over $200.00 for the cause and will be sent directly.
  • Glen Falls School:  School wide yard clean up.
  • Harbor View High School:  Quilt Patch Making (using recycled blue jeans); Garbage Clean-up (outside school and along Douglas Avenue); Walk for Wildlife; Wasteless and Meatless Lunch; and again this year, will be holding their big event, Relay for Life - May 13th.

Believe It!  See It!  Celebrate It!

The first week of October, 2010 has been declared Wellness Week in New Brunswick and the Saint John Wellness Network invites you to celebrate the launch of Saint John in motion.  On Wednesday October 6, 2010 at 12:00 noon there will be a public Zumba event on the Boardwalk at Market Square.   In motion is an evidence-based health promotion strategy, which uses physical activity and healthy eating as a means to improving the health of New Brunswick communities. In motion has 4 key components: building partnerships, increasing community awareness, developing strategies for target areas and measuring success.  In motion strategies target six specific groups: children and youth, workplace wellness, older adults, inactive adults, primary prevention of diabetes and referrals by health professionals.

gysd logo.jpgGlobal Youth Service Day 2010

Youth in the greater Saint John area were busy in their communities over the last few weeks as part of Global Youth Service Day – perhaps you saw these energetic youth out and about in your community especially during the week of April 19th.

Schools were encouraged to participate in this year’s event which took place from April 23rd to April 25th.  To kick off the event, poster boards, which were created by schools depicting all of their community involvement over the last year, were on display at Brunswick Square throughout the weekend.   Also, in the weeks leading up to, and following, the weekend, many schools were very busy giving back to their community and/or supporting global efforts.   Through raising funds to build a school in Africa, to recycling, to community/neighbourhood cleanup, to planting marigolds, to creating pillow cases for children with cancer,  to playing ‘freerice.com ,the youth of greater Saint John  continue to demonstrate many of the concepts of Celebrate!

Celebrating What’s Right in the Greater Saint John Area!

Our 3rd EYE SPY event was again a success!  With a more focused topic this year, we received over 1700 entries during the week of April 19th letting us know how youth in our community are making a difference.  From helping each other in class, to being a good friend, to cleaning up the neighbourhood, to raising money to build a school in a third world country, to hosting a breakfast for the homeless, to raising money to help a fellow student who is ill, were all ways people saw our youth changing the world!

Thank you to all who shared with us all the wonderful ways our youth are changing the world and making a difference!
